Early Memory

Every summer, my family would spend a week at our grand parents cottage in Sauble Beach. We would spend most afternoons on the ebach playing games, swimming and like most people, relaxing. One sunny day at the age 7, I took this opportunity to have my parents time me as I ran from out beach chairs, to the dunes and back. For hours, I tried to beat my previous best time. I am pretty sure my parents got tired of timing me and just started saying times that were close. Looking back on this day solidifies for me my competitive spirit and for me, it is about better myself and finding the thrill in pushing myself to the limits.

On Your Playlist

It most definitely changes for what I am doing. For working out; Oh Devil by Electric Guest and Get Home (feat. Konoba) by RO
For relaxing; Fool by Handsome Ghost and No Good With Faces by Jack Johnson
For driving; White Tiger by Izzy Bizu and My Friend by SonReal

Current/Best Read

The Liberator by Alex Kershaw. One of my absolute favourite books. Such an incredible story as well as eloquent writing as well as it evokes serious emotion. I am also a fan of Of Mice and Men by  John Steinbeck

Words To Live By

Focus on yourself, have fun, get after it.

Why do I do this? Probably because I am slightly nuts. I spend hundreds of hours, every year, outside, in the heat, rain and cold, before it is light out, making myself hurt beyond comprehension. It is a funny thing to choose to do that to yourself. I guess the simple answer is because I love it with all of my heart. There is a calming affect in knowing that you are bettering yourself as an athlete, that you are learning about yourself as a human. Crawling into bed with a body that is sore and yet I know that I will do it all again tomorrow puts a smile on my face.

Bio

Hello world!! My name is Julian TT Smith and I am an elite cross country skier from Oxenden, Ontario. Now I live and train in Thunder Bay with the National Team Development Centre where I am trying to qualify for the Canadian National Ski Team. I started skiing at the age of 3 when my parents moved to the Bruce Penninsula, and competitive training and racing began once I started high school at the age of 14. I am an extrovert, no doubt about it. I love being around others, I am a conversation enthusiast, and I tend to sue my “outdoor voice” a little bit too much. I am a believer in doing everything to the best of my ability. I set big goals, I am extremely competitive and I am always trying to better myself, be that in skiing, school, or life. I am a big fan of coffee, making lattes at home is a bit of a pass time for me. I also volunteer at a coffee shop, The Habit, where their proceeds all go towards their non for profit organization that helps addicted mothers back on their feet. I enjoy meditation, playing the guitar, and the arts from painting, to pottery to spoon carving, I try to do it all. I have been on the Ontario Ski Team for the past 7 years, I was on the Junior National Team in 2015/16, I have represented Canada at both Junior and Under 23 World Championships where my best result is 34th. I am looking to change that number this year as it is my last season as a U23 athlete. I hope you feel like you know me a little better now and if you see my out on the trails or anywhere else really, please strike up a conversation with me… I love a good conversation!
