Early Memory

My first track race in grade 4 did not suggest a promising “career” in athletics. It was a 400m track race and when the gun went off I sprinted as hard as I could but watched the field pull away from me. I came dead last (even after combining all heats)! I remember crying myself to sleep that night and my mom trying to comfort me by telling me that “well, someone had to come last”. In hindsight I guess it means I must have cared, even back then!
